Yes, Alice; back in the late 60s and 70s. I remember seeing him on the Ed Sullivan Show a few times.
i know... its sooo sad. Just gotta keep the karate chops!
He was also on "Happy Days."
I had no idea that he battled spinal tuberculosis, and then after he recovered was sent directly to a Japanese American concentration camp.
My favorite Mr. Miyagi scene was from Karate Kid II, they come off the train and see a poster of Sato, Miyagi's arch enemy, chopping a big tree trunk in half.
"Hey, Mr. Miyagi. Can you do that?" Daniel asks.
Miyagi looks at the advertisement of his rival and chuckles. "Don't know."
"Don't know?" Daniel is perplexed. "What do you mean you don't know?"
"Don't know," Miyagi repeats. "Never been attacked by tree."

I told Tony, he was sad.
